The “Traces of Oblivion” project at IGS Lüneburg explored the crimes committed during the final days of the war in April 1945, as well as the history of Jewish life in the city. The students researched historical events and biographies that are scarcely visible in the cityscape today. Inspired by artist Jan Vormann’s art project, they used donated LEGO bricks to make a statement at selected locations in public spaces. Through these colorful interventions, they brought forgotten stories and repressed memories to light and encouraged passersby to engage with local history. Jewish families lived for centuries on the street “Auf der Altstadt,” which was formerly called “Jodenstrate.” They played a significant role in shaping Lüneburg’s economic, cultural, and social life. Today, there is little left to remind us of the once-significant Jewish community. The installation draws attention to this history, which has largely become invisible, and invites visitors to explore the traces of Jewish life in Lüneburg.
