As part of the “Traces of Oblivion” project, students at IGS Lüneburg explored the crimes committed during the final days of the war in April 1945. Drawing inspiration from Jan Vormann’s art project, they used donated LEGO bricks to bring forgotten stories to life in the urban landscape.
At a site where, in April 1945, escaped prisoners from a transport from the Wilhelmshaven concentration camp satellite camp were shot by the SS, the students filled bullet holes and cracks in a wall with LEGO bricks. The red bricks, in particular, symbolize the violence and the blood shed by the victims. The contrast between the colorful toy material and the site’s harrowing history creates a sense of dissonance that encourages viewers to look more closely and engage with the historical context.
